Whether you’re out in the country full-time as a place of residence or simply a couple of months or weeks out of the year for vacation, it is important to realize that things are considerably different than back in the city or even in the suburbs. There is something great about the open spaces, ability to see all of the stars at night, and the chance to enjoy a somewhat more low-key pace to life. But at the same time, don’t allow the many differences that country living offers to lull you into complacency. There are still a number of things to be thinking about, even if you happen to be the only house for miles, when it comes to the most responsible ways to ensure that you have the absolute best home security at your country home.

The first thing that is effective for full-time country residents or those on vacation is to remember that it always makes more sense to lock your door and to never leave keys in car ignitions or in farm equipment, either. Because sometimes not having a lot of people around makes it as though there will never be people around, those country dwellers who are accustomed to having a lot of space will find themselves doing things like leaving the keys in the ignition of the car, because it saves a couple of moments when they’re heading out to town. But anyone in a city or even a small town would never do the same thing. Don’t allow yourself to take unnecessary risks in home security like that, because if there is someone around who is interested in breaking in, you’re basically handing them the keys to your car or your home by leaving things unlocked.

Likewise, it’s important to lock up not just when you venture off to town for a few hours, but also when you’re going to be on a different part of your property. If you’re regularly exploring multiple acres, then it is particularly crucial that you remember to lock up. After all, if anyone has been casing your home, they are well aware of your routines, and know how long you’ll likely be out in the fields. And because neighbors often live miles and miles down the road, there won’t be anyone to take note of the fact that there is a delivery or moving truck in your driveway for hours, and that goods appear to be leaving your house, rather than getting brought into it. This has been the fate of a number of people who live in more rural locations, so it’s definitely worthwhile to be diligent and to lock up when you’re on other parts of the property.

Another incredibly important step towards safety and peace of mind is deciding to make the investment in installing a well-made home security system. Because there are so many different alarms to choose from, it is easy to figure out something that will get the job done and not cause too much financial strain. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time somewhere, you might only want the alarm option, but if you’re not going to be around your country home a lot, it might make more sense to invest in a system that has automatic law enforcement response. Either way, the additional help of having an alarm around makes keeping a more out-of-the-way house a bit more protected.
